DESCRIPTION:On January 25, at 16:00, Lisbon Academy of Sciences will host a seminar by João Miranda Lemos, researcher at INESC-ID and full professor at Técnico, University of Lisbon, titled “Controlo, Incerteza e Otimalidade” (“ontrol, Uncertainty and Optimality). These ideas form the foundation of automatic control in dynamic systems, with emphasis on adaptive and optimal control.\nBio:\nJoão Miranda Lemos holds a Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering, earned through research conducted at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Florence and Imperial College London. He is a full professor at the University of Lisbon, where he serves in the Scientific Area of Systems, Decision, and Control within the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Instituto Superior Técnico. Dr. Lemos is a researcher at INESC-ID, a senior researcher at IEEE, and a member of the Order of Engineers. Over the course of his professional life, he has authored approximately 200 articles on research topics within his expertise, along with 4 books. His interests focus on the modeling and control of uncertain systems, with an emphasis on predictive and adaptive control, applied to diverse systems ranging from biomedical to technical systems such as solar collector fields, water distribution channels, boilers for electricity generation, and space launchers. He has been involved in numerous research projects in collaboration with universities and industrial companies in these areas.\n/PT\nResumo: Através de exemplos desafiadores para a investigação e de grande impacto socioeconómico, em áreas muito diversas, desde energia solar até pacientes sujeitos a anestesia, este seminário apresenta uma visão para não especialistas de algumas grandes ideias relativas à dicotomia entre incerteza e otimalidade, que estão na base do controlo automático de sistemas dinâmicos, com ênfase no controlo adaptativo e ótimo.\nBio:\nJoão Miranda Lemos é doutor em engenharia eletrotécnica e de computadores, tendo obtido o grau após trabalho realizado na Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade de Florença e no Imperial College de Londres, e professor catedrático da Universidade de Lisboa, onde exerce funções na Área Científica de Sistemas, Decisão e Controlo do Departamento de Engenharia Eletrotécnica e de Computadores do Instituto Superior Técnico. É investigador do INESC-ID, senior researcher do IEEE e membro da Ordem dos Engenheiros. No decurso da sua vida profissional, publicou cerca de 200 artigos sobre temas de investigação da sua especialidade, 4 livros e orientou 14 alunos de doutoramento e cerca de 60 mestrados. Os seus interesses estão centrados na modelação e controlo de sistemas incertos, com ênfase para o controlo preditivo e adaptativo, e em aplicações a sistemas diversificados, desde sistemas biomédicos a sistemas técnicos, como campos de coletores solares, canais de distribuição de água, caldeiras para a produção de energia elétrica ou lançadores espaciais, tendo estado envolvido em vários projetos de investigação nestas áreas em colaboração com universidades e empresas industriais.\n
